Water filters are an often overlooked, integral part of the whole coffee machine.

Even in a soft water region, scale deposits will congregate where boiling water resides

It's been said before, hard water kills Espresso Machines.

Tap water is considered too hard for producing the perfect Espresso. Mainly, that there is too much Calcium Carbonate, or a mix of Calcium and Magnesium, the white substance (scale), that will form against metalic surfaces within your machine. In particular, around the jets and filters that control water flow in the machine.

Unless your water comes from a well, then filtration is vitally important, not just the well being of your machine, but also for the quality of the produced Espresso.

Chlorine can really taint the quality of the final product, so the installed filter should be able to filter contaminants, odours and tastes. The most efficient filters contain Carbon. Also, trace elements from the use of Carbon filters can actually improve the taste of your Espresso.
